After teaming together in Madamby, Mohanlal is once again playing the lead role in scenarist-turned-director B.Unnikrishnan’s film.
B.Unnikrishnan has started the shoot for his Grandmaster, which has the superstar donning khaki once again. Mohanlal plays the role of a police officer named Chandrashekharan, who works with the Metro Crime-Stopper Cell. Chandrashekharan’s wife Deepthi is a criminal lawyer. At a stage, relations between the two gets strained and that affects their professional lives. Chandrashekharan doesn’t pay much attention to his work. It is at this stage that Fernandez, who’s a highly-placed officer with the Crime Stopper Cell and a well-wisher of Chandrashekharan, asks him to head an investigation regarding the missing of three young girls. The plot develops from there.
Priyamani as Deepthi makes a comeback to Malayalam cinema after a long gap. It’s for the first time that the actress will be seen with Mohanlal. Naren plays a key role, that of a young police officer named Kishore. Devan is in the role of Fernandez.
That Chandrashekharan, played by Mohanlal, is a good chess player too accounts for the relevance of the title, which of course has much to do with the theme too.
The cast also includes Anoop Menon, Roma, Mithra Kurian, Riyaz Khan, Seena, Siddique, Babu Antony, Rajshri Nair and Fathima Babu.
Music is by Deepak Dev while Vinod Illampally cranks the camera and Manoj does the editing. The art direction is done by Joseph Nellickal. B.Unnikrishnan himself is in charge of the script.
Ronnie Screwvala produces Grandmaster under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures and the film is at present being shot at Ernakulam. Bengaluru is also one of the locations.
