"Jilla", which released in more than 1,000 screens worldwide, received positive reviews from both critics and audience.
Despite facing strong competition from Ajith's "Veeram", "Jilla" opened well across all areas. Theatres screening "Jilla" witnessed good occupancy on the first day, despite the film releasing on a non-holiday Friday (10 January). Even for the early dawn shows, crowds thronged to watch their favourite stars' film.
"Jilla" has taken a fantastic opening in Tamil Nadu; reportedly grossing over ₹7 crore at the box office. The film has performed exceptionally well in Kerala as well, thanks to the presence of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, and also Vijay, who enjoys a good fan following in the state.
Mohanlal distributed "Jilla" in Kerala and ensured the film released in over 200 screens. The action-packed entertainer has taken a record opening in Kerala, grossing ₹2.62 crore on the first day, which is the higgest one-day gross for any film in the state, reported entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai.
"#Jilla - Grosses 2.62 Cr on day 1 (Jan 10) in Kerala from 211 screens. Highest single day gross for any film in the state," Sreedhar tweeted.
The Vijay-Mohanlal starrer has reportedly grossed over ₹10 crore on the first day of its release. The film continued its successful run on the second day as well, though details about the second day collections are yet to be made available.
Positive word of mouth will help "Jilla" do fantastic business and mint good collections in its opening weekend. As the 10-day Pongal holidays have begun, "Jilla" is expected to continue its successful run for another week.
Directed by RT Neason, "Jilla" is an action drama that revolves around the bonding between Vijay and Mohanlal. After a short gap, Vijay is back to doing mass, masala entertainers. "Jilla" has all the commercial elements - action, comedy, romance and emotion. Both Vijay and Mohanlal's performances have received appreciation from all quarters.
