KADHAPARAYUMBOL
I GOT THIS REVIEW FROM MY FRIEND. READ IT. Ironically, the title “Katha Parayumbol” has turned out to be a misnomer as the film has no particular “Katha” to narrate. Sreenivasan desperately tries to rework his old success formula (satirical takes on the woes & worries of the layman), but ends up delivering a shallow, predictable script that lacks the novelty, coherence or strong content of his famous works. Sreeni has liberally borrowed from films like “Azhakiya Ravanan”, Rajasenan’s “Srikrishnapurathe Nakshathrathilakkam”, the scripts he wrote for Sathyan Anthikkad and even from the Srikrishna-Kuchela folklore !!

Barber Balan is your quintessential common man. He is a naïve, innocent, simpleton living off an old-fashioned barber shop in a remote picturesque village. Having a large family (consisting of a wife and three kids) to support, Balan struggles to make both ends meet with his paltry income. Life gets harder when competition surfaces in the form of Sarasan (Jagadeesh), who sets up a modern barber shop with all the latest amenities in the same village. Though stricken with poverty, Balan is a honest man of strong principles and has a stubborn ego just like the protagonists in previous Sreenivasan movies. Therefore he abstains from treading the wrong path (such as offering bribes to officials or accepting favours) in order to improve his business. Hence Balan is often exploited by his fellow villagers, laughed upon and dismissed off as a useless even by his own kids.

You now know where things are heading. One fine morning superstar Ashok Raj (Mammootty) arrives on the scene for the shoot of his new film “Pakshikal Parakkatte”. Ashok Raj has a typical rags-to-riches story. From humble beginnings, he went on to conquer great heights as a film star and is now a highly respected personality (shades of Mammootty himself). Understandably, his presence sends the villagers into frenzy as they have never witnessed a film shoot before or seen a film star in flesh & blood.

Barber Balan is an old friend of the matinee idol and this connection suddenly transforms him into a hot property in the village. People who once ignored him now queue up in front of his hut requesting for favours from the superstar. But Balan is afflicted with the “Kuchelan syndrome”! He feels that Ashok Raj, having risen to such dizzying heights, may not even recognize him. The fear of rejection puts Balan in a big dilemma as pressure mounts on him from friends & family to influence the superstar. This leads to the climax, where the relationship between the two childhood friends unfolds.

There are no twists or turns and the predictable sequences drain your interest as the movie progresses. Since the storyline is thin, the film drags at many instances, even though the duration is just 2 hours. Many comedy dialogues & scenes meant to evoke laughter fail. Some numbers like misspelling Eappachan as Eachappan, Sreeni’s remark that his daughters became fair-skinned because their father is a German and not him, Mukesh (who runs a tuition centre) bribing his students with love letters to make them settle their fee dues etc are substandard, irritating and unexpected from a writer of Sreeni’s caliber. However, to be fair to the writer, few comedies are worth a laugh.

On the acting front, Sreeni repeats his tried & tested self-mocking act yet again. Mammootty, appearing in just 4-5 scenes, has nothing much to do. His sentimental speech in the climax was greeted with resounding howls!! The useless “cinema shooting song” also got the same treatment and deservedly so! As expected, Sreeni-the-writer takes a dig at Mammootty-the-star on certain occasions. In one instance, a fan (Augustine) asks Ashok Raj why he’s being branded a “jaada party”. Sreeni also attempts to expose the current trend in Malayalam cinema, wherein film shooting starts before the script is completed.

Innocent & Salim Kumar provide some comic relief. Suraaj & Jagathy were wasted. But the biggest disappointment was Mukesh, who got one of the least author-backed roles in his career. Meena was okay, but she looked too beautiful & aristocratic to play a poor man’s wife. Debutant director K.Mohanan tried to do a Sathyan Anthikkad, but looked more like a puppet-director overwhelmed by Sreeni’s script and hasn’t succeeded beyond a limit. Overall the film is watchable & peppered with a few nice moments, but is disappointing considering Sreeni’s ability & track record.

Crowd Response: Mixed opinion. More sighs of frustration than cries of joy. Mammu fans greeted Mammu & dialogues referring to him with slogans & applauses. Resounding howls for Mammu’s song and the climax. Few claps & laughters here & there for some comedies. Forecast: Bleak, unless Flash & Kangaroo disappoints. Prediction: Flop/Average

This not true. If the film is not a wholesome entertainer this dose'nt that mean it's a flop. A film's fate cannot be decided after 3 days of it's release. As far as superstar's film are concerned there will be initial crowd pull, after that only the true test begins. People writing articles for Sites like rediff, sify will always see the film with preset minds because it's a human tendency. MOST of them are true Mamooties fans like we are Lalettan fans. Then how can they give true criticism. Just see the review of katha parayambol, "the film gives you he a nostalgic feeling of old malayalam films and they say it's great but a fresh approach like Rock and Roll or Flash is criticised.

Kadha parayumbol.
The highlight of the movie is its climax. I felt mammu overacting that scene. But i heard somebody saying wonderful piece of acting.
