Mohanlal seeks leniency for Sanjay Dutt

Actor Mohanlal on Saturday sought leniency towards Sanjay Dutt, sentenced for five year imprisonment in the Mumbai blasts, saying he is a reformed man.

Superstar Mohanlal termed Sanjay Dutt as a good citizen, a loving family man and a person who has braved adversity and come out stronger and better.

Sanjay Dutt was earlier convicted by the TADA court for illegal possession of a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle. The Supreme Court had not found Dutt guilty of the blasts but found him guilty of having in his possession a prohibited weapon without licence.

Mohanlal, who has almost seven lakh followers in Facebook , claimed in his post  that Sanjay certainly deserved our compassion and support to help close chapter forever.

Mohanlal's appeal on Facebook attracted tremendous response with 'likes' and comments from almost 10,000 people, most of whom supported him for the friendly gesture.

His comments became a topic of discussion on twitter also. Many tweeterattis posted tweets seeking relief for Sanjay. However, there were many users who criticised Mohanlal as well. Many opined that Sanjay Dutt was convicted after the trial so he should face the punishment.

Tollywood actors Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan had also supported Sanjay Dutt in the issue.

Press Council of India chief Markandey Katju also has appealed to Maharashtra Governor K. Sankarnarayanan to pardon the actor. He opined that the governor has vested in him the power to pardon the actor.

‘He is a reformed man’

"Over the last 20 years my colleague and friend Mr. Sanjay Dutt has been a reformed and good citizen, a loving family man and a person who has braved adversity and come out stronger and better. He certainly deserves our compassion and help to put this chapter behind him once and for all. I sincerely hope and pray that he is shown the leniency he truly deserves and is granted a pardon."
